HTM 08-01 Acoustics in Healthcare
Giving careful consideration to the acoustic design of healthcare premises is paramount in achieving a suitable environment for healthcare workers and patients. If measures are not taken to control noise and vibration, it can become intrusive to the point where workers as well as patients are put under stress.
The effects of unwanted sound or noise can lead to increased heart rate, blood pressure, respiration rate and even blood cholesterol levels. Good acoustic conditions within healthcare buildings improve patient privacy and can improve essential sleep patterns. There is growing evidence such conditions are an essential part of the healing process.
Providing an appropriate acoustic environment can result in hospital/clinic staff working more efficiently and help patients to make a more speedy recovery. Advice and guidance for the acoustic design of healthcare premises is set out within the NHS Estates publication: Health Technical Memorandum (08-01).
Hann Tucker Associates offers consultancy advice and compliance testing provisions to those wishing to fulfil the requirements of Health Technical Memorandum.
